When these things happen, having access to clear, practical guidance can make an enormous difference to the outcome. TravelHelper was created to be the resource you turn to when things get complicated.

But TravelHelper is not just a problem-solving resource. We also help you plan better trips from the start — anticipating the challenges before they arise, building contingency plans into your itinerary, and ensuring that you have everything you need before you leave home. Prevention is always better than cure, and our pre-trip planning guides are designed to eliminate the most common travel problems before they occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do immediately if my flight is cancelled? +
Act quickly and systematically: (1) Do not leave the airport or the secure area if possible. (2) Open your airline's app immediately — many airlines now allow rebooking through the app faster than through customer service queues. (3) If the app doesn't work, call the airline's customer service number (have it saved in your phone before you travel). (4) Simultaneously, join the queue at the airline's customer service desk as a backup. (5) Know your rights: if the cancellation is the airline's fault, you are entitled to rebooking at no charge and, depending on the jurisdiction, meals and accommodation. (6) Document everything: take photos of departure boards, keep all receipts for expenses incurred due to the cancellation.
How do I find my lost luggage? +
If your luggage doesn't arrive: (1) Report it immediately at the airline's baggage service desk before leaving the airport — do not leave without filing a report. (2) Obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with a reference number. (3) Provide the airline with your contact details and accommodation address. (4) Use the PIR reference number to track your bag's status online through the airline's baggage tracking system. (5) Keep all receipts for essential purchases (toiletries, basic clothing) while waiting for your bag — the airline is required to reimburse reasonable expenses. (6) If your bag is not found within 21 days, it is considered permanently lost and you can file a compensation claim.
What travel insurance do I actually need? +
At minimum, every international traveler should have: (1) Medical coverage — at least USD 100,000 for medical expenses and emergency evacuation. Medical costs in countries like the USA, Japan, and Australia can be extraordinarily high without insurance. (2) Trip cancellation and interruption coverage — this protects your investment if you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to illness, family emergency, or other covered reasons. (3) Baggage and personal effects coverage — for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage. Optional but valuable additions include: cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage, adventure sports coverage if you're doing anything active, and rental car coverage. Always read the policy exclusions carefully.
What do I do if I lose my passport abroad? +
Losing your passport abroad is stressful but manageable: (1) Report the loss to the local police and obtain a police report — this is required for most passport replacement applications and insurance claims. (2) Contact your country's nearest embassy or consulate immediately. (3) Bring any identification you have (driver's license, copies of your passport, photos) and evidence of your travel plans (flight bookings, hotel reservations). (4) Most embassies can issue an emergency travel document within 24 to 72 hours for travelers with imminent flights. (5) Keep digital copies of your passport in a secure cloud service (encrypted email, password manager) so you can access them from anywhere. (6) Contact your travel insurance provider — passport replacement costs may be covered.
